Condoleeza Ballerina

A song
By
Stephen Wayne

Several years ago I attempted to write a song artistically expressing the life-long relationship between a strong father and his gifted, equally strong, successful, and graceful daughter. Although I was satisfied with the composition, I never really liked the name I had originally given the daughter.
The name of the daughter needed to personify an exceptional woman, and fit the cadence, the meter of the song. I found such a name, and the connotations wanted, in Condoleeza.
Dr. Condoleesa Rice, by living, excelling, and succeeding (gracefully) has given me the name I needed for the song. She has also given us all a good name that will gracefully personify exceptional womanhood in the collective song of our national history.

Once a precious little baby, came into his life one spring day
He watched her grow into a lady, and she danced for him each day
His darling Condoleeza, his lovely ballerina
He’d ask her please…

“Dance ballerina… dance for daddy… Condoleeza
Like the wind… ballerina… twirl and tease… ballerina
Dance… ballerina… pirouette… ballerina
Blow a kiss… Condoleeza… for daddy’s lips… ballerina”

Time and miles came between them, it’s been years since she’s seen him
He lives in dreams while she dances, for Kings and Queens in their mansions
His darling Condoleeza, now a prima ballerina
He’d ask her please…

“Dance ballerina… dance for daddy… Condoleeza
Like the wind… ballerina… twirl and tease… ballerina
Dance… ballerina… pirouette… ballerina
Blow a kiss… Condoleeza… for daddy’s lips… ballerina”

He died alone in winter, and a note he left her
Loving lines on paper, in tears she read his letter
“I love you Condoleeza, you’re my prima ballerina
And always…

Dance ballerina… dance for daddy… Condoleeza
Like the wind… ballerina… twirl and tease… ballerina
Dance… ballerina… pirouette… ballerina
Blow a kiss… Condoleeza… for daddy’s lips… ballerina.”
